Possibilities and Door Knocks

I haven't cancelled my flights yet. Perhaps, even after losing all will and desire to make the journey happen I am waiting for a miracle.

Then again, opportunity is knocking here and I am knocking over furniture to answer the door! A blind lawyer approached my colleague at work and offerred a freelance research position with his company. I cannot call him yet because he is travelling in Bhutan at the moment as one of his clients is the King of Bhutan! It staggers me that someone could travel alone to Bhutan on business without their most essential sense. He also lectures at the University of Queensland - I recall seeing him catch the bus many a time when I was studying there. He is absolutely, completely blind - he regularly bumps into things and always stops then gives out a discouraged sigh. He sounds as though he is so fed up with not being able to see.

It makes my whimpering look pathetic really.

But then, my cold feet was highly uncharacteristic of me. Today I noticed in the newspaper that New Delhi has had a breakout of dengue fever - THOUSANDS of people are in hospital. I am now breathing a small sigh of relief. I had only just finished reading the true story of an Australian woman who caught dengue fever in Sri Lanka. She had to have blood transfusions, was constantly vomiting and almost died.

My friends call me superstitious but I my gut feeling has always steered me clear of trouble. Well, almost always ; )

For some reason I keep thinking of the nuns I saw while in Europe. I love nuns. They are always so animated and so unique, like they are their own little species. And they are always so small! Not like midgets but always much shorter than average. I sometimes wonder if thats on the selection criteria for monastery admission. Do they have to be shorter than the pope? Is it because they don't eat much protein? Does being small qualify you better to be humble? I wish I had the courage to take photos of them but it felt inappropriate to poke a lens at them.

Another photo opportunity I regret not being bold enough to take was in an internet cafe in Lhasa, Tibet. A young monk in his red robes and shaved head was enthusiastically playing a 'shoot-em-up' game on the computer. In the midst of ancient tradition and mystical practice this guy was blowing the guts out of digital opponents. It was pure National Geographic!

I just got my digital camera the other day and have been going nuts with it. Its a Sony Cybershot and I have already taken some great shots of my nephews - I love doing portraits lately - I want to take more photos of my friends and family. Its so easy to let time roll away from you and then you have missed the moment forever.
