How far would you go for a first date?
Why can't real life be like the movies?
I mean, I'm at the Gold Coast right now - what better setting for something unexpected, something exciting, something out of the blue. Like this morning almost was...
I was relaxing on my balcony of a lovely apartment overlooking the Broadwater. I can see weatherworn houseboats reclining in the water. The apartments I'm staying at are called "Blue Lagoon" and for once I have to admit its an appropriate nomer with the flat water surrounded by a sandy spit which is substantial enought to be vegetated. With honey-soaked Vita Brits and an aromatic chai tea before me I decide the most pressing item on my agenda at that moment is to look out for dolphins.
Instead, I see a jet skier zoom across the water carving a trough behind him in the otherwise pristing water. He goes back and forth and then eventually draws very close to the shore and pauses. He is looking up at the apartment balcony. He is so close I can make out the colour of his hair but I can't discern which balcony he is looking at. He then motions with his hand. No-one calls out. No-one goes out to meet him. The cup of chai tea pauses midway to my mouth. He couldn't be? No. He takes off but soon returns and pauses once more and looks upward once more in my direction. I do the calculations. There are only three levels to the apartment complex and only three of the balconies were in his line of sight. How many people would be on their balcony at 10am?
He calls something out but I can't make out the words. No-one responds and I start to wonder again. Is the mysterious stranger wanting me to join him on his jet ski? He takes off once more. He sweeps around in an odd manoevouer. As he completes the turn I see the wake of his jet ski has created a love heart in the water. A serious of images flash through my head. Bikini. Jet ski. Drinks on the balcony. Crackling fire on the beach. 'Marry me' drawn in the sand. Could this be the bold, spontaneous man I've wished into reality?
The sandy-haired stranger drives his jet ski up to the shore and drags it up onto the sand. What should I do? What is he going to do? I can barely restrain the urge to wave, fearing that this sort of thing doesn't happen in real life. He removes his vest and approaches the street. I'm holding my breath in anticipatory wonder. Is this the beginning of a romantic adventure? Just as I am about to run inside and put on some waterproof mascara a woman emerges with a young girl. They cross the street and embrace one another.
Sigh. I go inside and make a new agenda. I need to get out of this country. I need to go somewhere where bold, unexpected and exciting. The trip which I had shelved for three years had too many expectations tied to it. If I'm going to travel this year it has to be something bold, something fun and something I haven't done before.
I remember that I was asked some weeks ago by a lovely guy to meet him for sushi near his work...in Japan.
It sounds perfect.

How far would I go?
All the way...to Hong Kong.
Albeit I suggested the time and place for the 'first date' and I did already know the 'asker' quite well but platonically...
I loved this story. And...it played out in my mind just like a movie...
...loved reading this...truly...whimsical and funny...

Great post, your writing is beautiful.
Sorry that the initial 'date' never worked out, but it did make for a good fantasy.... for all of us I`m sure
Go to Japan girl, what do you have to lose in the grand scheme of things? Plus, it`s rules of international travel - once you leave your country you leave your 'self' behind, therefore no rules apply.
Plus Jetstar are having a special to Japan at the moment so that could be a sign
Have fun
